POOR (2)
I’ve driven through Iowa twice, in November 2008 and November 2010. Both times, I took I-80 all the way across, through Des Moines.
The state felt quite unpleasant to me both times, and so I didn’t stop. I didn’t encounter the worst toxin for me though.
On my 2010 trip through, the air started to feel somewhat better about 30 miles east of Omaha.
In late October 2011, I drove south on I-29 through Iowa, passing through Sioux City and Council Bluffs. I briefly stopped in Council Bluffs for dinner. I would not have wanted to stay longer in this area. (2-POOR)

I have family in Iowa and we travel there a couple of times a year. Generally, rural areas aren't too bad but the chemical/farming stuff can be a problem. Over the last several years there has been major flooding of the cities and there is a huge mold issue in some places. It's hit and miss though. I wouldn't suggest anyone spend time anyplace in Iowa unless they are really healthy.
1 to 5 depending where you are.

Council Bluffs: 2 Poor I was there from Oct to Dec 2010. I remember the day the stingy toxin blew in on a storm front from the south. December 1, 2010. It appears to have settled in there. The Missouri River valley seems to attract stingy toxins and hold them there. Council Bluffs is a gritty industrial town, so there may be chemicals from the coal power plant and etc. As well. I burned my hand pretty badly by touching a metal railing outside the Hilton Garden Inn in March of 2011. I know a person with fibromyalgia in CB who suffers horribly.
Sioux City: 2 Poor Another gritty industrial town. I stayed there for a night in March 2011 and wrecked my car from leaving it outside all night. Geez! It has the same stingy toxin as Council Bluffs. This was before the Missouri River flooded. I have driven through several times since then and I never stop.

Sioux City April 2012: it was a hair better when I drove through town on I-29. I guess it makes sense since spring is generally the best time for air quality.
