A report from 2007: I have had ME/CFS for 16 years. One of the few things that seems to make a difference to my health is location; I have just returned from Cape Town, South Africa (warm, dry-ish, by the sea) to East Anglia, UK (cold, very damp, inland) and feel much worse. It seems that bad factors for are cold, damp, pollution, and lack of sunlight (as in UK winter). I have also been wondering if mould (mold) is harmful: the house I live in in the UK is damp and prone to mould. Places where I have felt better were: Islands (e.g. Crete), Greece Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spanish but geographically just off Morocco Cape Town, South Africa. So I have concluded that good factors are warmth, sunlight, lack of pollution, and (possibly - not sure) closeness to sea. -Lesley health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS_CFIDS_ME/message/4039?l=1

A report from 2003: I've been to Spain (various parts and Portugal) in the winter for a week at a time. I've noticed no improvement in my health there. Also France. The best for me have been the Greek Islands, Thailand and Cuba. Kindest regards, Annette p.s. from New Zealand originally health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS_CFIDS_ME/message/322?l=1

A report from 2002: I was on the Northern Coast of Spain last year, thinking that the location would be ideal...cool, right on the beach, etc. But it was not a "feel good" place. Then I looked at the Ozone readings- YIKES! Higher on many days than St. Louis! -Alexander health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS_CFIDS_ME/message/66?l=1

Im a 32 year old male and I've been sick in ME/CFS like symptoms for eight years now to the extent that I haven't been able to work at all the last few years. I live in Stockholm Sweden. Since I got sick I've been to the canary Islands three times, each time for a week. The Canary Islands are a few small islands located to the west of the Sahara desert in Africa but they belong to Spain. I've been in Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria, Playa De Las Americas in Tenerife and Taurito in Gran Canaria. All these places are extremely dry and sunny and right by the ocean. Every single time I've felt a significant improvement already after just one or two days. I've been able to tick off more or less every symptom I have. I have constant brain fog back at home in Sweden but it goes away within a day at the Canary Islands. It's such a dramatic difference. I'm able to do things I wouldn't dream of doing back home. I can take pretty long walks without any major PEM. My mood gets better. My skin gets better. All my stomach issues goes away. My candida infection seems to die off. I fall asleep easier. I wake up earlier. My pulse goes down. I breathe slower and more relaxed. My outgoing personality that I've lost since becoming ill comes back. My libido goes up. The list goes on.
I just wish now that I'd be able to stay there longer. I'm back home now and I feel horrible again. But I'm very hopeful about the future. I probably have to move to southern Europe somewhere and "re-start" my life.

Hi I tried to post a reply to this last night but think I did it wrong (brainfog) sleep deprived and ill.
My Son is hoping to take me on my very first holiday to Spain in June but I'm plagued with virus's and infections, current one being 7 weeks so far and it's only 5 weeks to the holiday, we just figured if I could possibly get there it would hopefully do me the world of good, I am keeping everything crossed because if I don't take the risk now I never will.

I forgot to say I have been bedridden with ME/Fibro for 17 years unable to do anything at all for 99% of the time and occasionally go out for a coffee for an hour. If I can make it there we have chosen nearest place being Spain shortest flight etc, expecting to be in bed for a few days to get over the journey which I will be medicated up for due to pain but really hoping I will be well enough to go outside for sea air and warmth,it's a hotel right on the beach, this is such a big risk and a dream in my heart and my head but god willing it will happen.

In late March/early April 2015 I spent one week in Northern Tenerife, Canary Islands and I'd generally recommend avoiding it- very lush, damp, cool, tons of agriculture, high elevation, I felt awful there.
I then spent 5 weeks in Lanzarote, Canary Islands where I felt great. It's dry, warm/hot, windy, and volcanic terrain. Almost all restaurants and homes have outdoor space so you can be outside almost 24/7. I believe there are hidden mold issues in some of the homes in Lanzarote, because it rains so infrequently they're unprepared for it and the locals reported problems with flooding of homes. But since you can be outside most of the time the problems have less of an effect. Downsides- very difficult to find fresh organic food or even fresh veggies and protein in the areas I was in. Chicken/beef at the store often had soy and gluten added to it and just looked gross. Their version of veggies was bagged lettuce rotting on shelves and frozen peas. Because of that I found it unsustainable. But for anyone who just needs a place to regroup I thought it was good mold-wise. Caveat: my observations are largely based on Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, which is the resort area where I stayed. I rented a "villa" through Airbnb, actually a tiny townhouse type place with a little back patio that I slept in. In Playa Blanca I did well at the Marina Rubicon and in the area of town east of there. If I went too far west in Playa Blanca I ran into problems- heart racing and trouble breathing. So perhaps Mystery Toxin was a player there or else there was something else in the environment. I ruled out EMFs, but otherwise never figured out the cause. So if you do go I'd recommend looking for accommodation around the Marina or to the east of there. Oh and one tip food-wise, very limited English in Playa Blanca and I have a gluten allergy, which was confusing at restaurants. I learned if you just say "Celiac" they know you can't eat gluten and take it very seriously. Once I learned that eating out was easy.
After 5 weeks in Lanzarote most of my (previously VERY abnormal) mold labs normalized, which shocked even my doctor. I had more energy, was sleeping less, waking naturally, felt less depressed/more positive (& stopped crying!!!), my brain felt a bit clearer, my fingers stopped locking up, my pain decreased, and I just looked healtheir. I certainly didn't fully recover my health, but made more progress in those 5 weeks than I had in years of aggressive treatment for my Lyme and tick-borne coinfections and all that comes along with that mess. Downside was my bowels had largely stopped moving due to lack of fresh veggies so staying just wasn't an option. Since returning to the US I have no doubt my labs have reverted back to their abnormal status and will soon confirm that with my doctor.
