A report from 2002: I live in SA and have had ME for about 5 years. I'm nearly 37. I have recently had intensive EMF treatment and acupuncture and so on, and feel that I am recovering at the moment. But I understand and fully accept that I will probably also continue to be vulnerable and will have to listen carefully to my body for the rest of my life. I live in Johannesburg, and although I really don't like living in this city, being part of this list is making me realise why I may have got so sick when I was living in Cape Town a couple of years ago. CT is often wet and cold whereas Jhb has much hotter, drier weather. Sue health.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS_CFIDS_ME/message/227?l=1

GOOD (4)
I’ve been to Japan several times, though not since doing avoidance. I usually tried to stay in old Japanese ryokans which (I have realized) are less likely to have toxic mold problems than conventional hotels.
TOKYO: GOOD (4)
I visited Tokyo several times, in winter and summer. The last time was August 2006. I generally felt really good in Tokyo, a lot like I did in NYC.
KYOTO: POOR (2)
I visited Kyoto in August 1998. I liked the city a lot, but I didn’t feel especially good here.
OSAKA: FAIR (3)
I visited here in August 1998. It’s a big city and not that interesting, but I felt somewhat better here than I did in Kyoto.
TAKAYAMA: EXCELLENT (5)
This is a small village in the mountains of central Japan. I was here in August 1998 and felt really good.
HAKONE & MT. FUJI: FAIR (3)
I was here in August 1998, staying in an old hot springs hotel. I felt okay, to my recollection.
TOHOKU REGION: EXCELLENT (5)
This is a mountainous region north of Tokyo. It’s mostly rural, consisting largely of rice fields. I visited this region for a week in August 2006, spending time in Sendai, Matushita (a tourist city overlooking the ocean), and a number of old hot springs ryokans.
I felt better in this area than I had in years, achieving almost a full remission. I thought about moving here permanently, even though I do not speak Japanese.
Note that most of my time here was spent in the robes supplied by the Japanese inns rather than in my own clothes.
Unfortunately, Sendai is where the nuclear power plant melted down after the earthquake in Winter 2011. I doubt this region is very good now, therefore.

POOR (2)
I’ve been to Tapiei several times, most recently (I believe) in 1997. I stayed in hotels.
I never felt good in this city, even before I got CFS.
Sometimes we stayed at the Grand Hotel, which is up on a hill above the city. I felt a little better there, but not great.

AWFUL - 1
I spent about a week in London in Summer 1995, when I was first starting to get ME/CFS.
I then returned for the entire summer of 1997, living in an apartment in Surbiton (a suburb of London). I spent a few nights in Manchester and a few nights in Stratford-upon-Avon, and took a lot of day trips.
I felt really horrible on both of these trips, much worse than anywhere else at the time.
I felt a bit better in Stratford-upon-Avon than I did anywhere else. We stayed in a very old inn (called The White Swan) there. (3-FAIR)

FAIR (3)
I toured various regions of France (Paris, Strausburg, Dijon, Loire Valley) several times prior to getting sick. I visited the Cote d’Azur in 1995, when I was first starting to get sick with ME/CFS, and then returned there in 1997.
I always visited France in summer.
I tended to be very irritable in France in general. It was much better for me than England, but still problematic.
I wish I could say that some parts of the country were better for me than others, but I don't recall that being the case.

I started to experience health problems (fatigue, cognitive issues, mood problems) in 1994, when I was working on my doctorate. My illness turned into classic ME/CFS in 1996. By 2007, I was in bed 18-22 hours a day and fading very fast. I also qualify for Fibromyalgia, Lyme Disease and Mold Illness (CIRS) diagnoses. I used to have MCS, but that has now gone away. I was born in Cincinnati in 1964, and then lived in a rural area outside of Indianapolis from age 9-18. I moved to Chicago in 1982 for college and lived there throughout my adult life. In late 2007, I realized that I had a toxic mold problem in my house. I have been pursuing "extreme avoidance" since 2009, living in an RV and traveling around to different locations in the U.S. I'm generally almost wholly well now, as long as I remain in good locations. My ability to tolerate a broader range of locations has improved over the last three years as well. A map of my travels (color coded by how I felt) is here. locationseffect.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=locations&action=display&thread=242&page=1A travelogue of my journeys is here: twitpic.com/photos/SlayaDragonThose interested in the topics of ME/CFS, toxic mold, biotoxins or the Locations Effect should feel free to friend me on Facebook. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1603672188My bio is below. Best, Lisa * Lisa Petrison, Ph.D. Lisa has worked as an assistant professor and head of the Integrated Marketing Communications program at the School of Business at Loyola University Chicago, and as a marketing consultant and executive speaker for a variety of companies (including California Pizza Kitchen, Wells Fargo, Discover Card, Shell Oil, Hallmark Cards, Visa, Abbott Laboratories, Fireman’s Fund Insurance, Rodale Press and Cox Cable). Earlier in her career, she worked in PR/marketing for the Chicago Association for Retarded Citizens and in the banking and video game industries, and was a reporter for Adweek Magazine. She acquired CFS/ME in 1994 but is mostly recovered. She has B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in marketing (with an emphasis in social psychology) from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern.

It's our experience that discussions of the Locations Effect can be unexpectedly contentious. Most of this tends to be related to several issues.
The first is whether the Locations Effect is "real" and (if so) what the cause of it is. This is an important topic to discuss openly, and we are looking forward to lively and thought-stimulating debate on it. So that it does not disrupt other discussions though, please keep these discussions in the "Locations Effect Theory" section.
Another disagreement is on whether particular locations are "good" or "bad." The whole point of this board is for everyone to be able to contribute their experiences of different places. Please share your experiences openly, keeping in mind that others' experiences may differ.
People with neuroimmune illness tend to be especially sensitive to their environments, and respond strongly to all kinds of stimuli (e.g. sound, light, chemicals, foods). Most of us have had frustrating experiences with people telling us that we are "imagining things" and should "get over it." The same thing is true in terms of how people feel in general in particular locations. Please try to give members the benefit of the doubt that they are reporting their own experiences accurately, rather than dismiss what they are saying.
Some people are resistant to the idea that the place that they are currently living may be "bad," and respond negatively to suggestions that they might want to move. Since part of the goal of this board is to learn to take advantage of the Locations Effect, comments about the effects that a particular location may have on someone's health (e.g. "You might feel better if you moved to a different area") are appropriate. However, we all are doing the best that we can to get better with the resources we have available (otherwise we wouldn't be on this board!), and the Locations Effect is not yet scientifically proven. Thus, comments such as "If you really wanted to get better, you would move" should be avoided.
The goal of this board is to share information about the Locations Effect. It is not a support or social forum. We welcome contributions from all members, regardless of their personalities. Assessments of people's personalities are irrelevant to the mission of this board and not welcome here.
Because we are trying to determine how specific locations affect people with different diseases, it's appropriate to discuss what specific disease(s) people posting here have. Obviously though, even if someone does not qualify for (say) a diagnosis of ME, that does not mean that s/he does not have a "real disease." Regardless of what symptoms people report, please avoid conferring an "All in Your Head" diagnosis on them.
In general, many problems on message boards result from people passing judgments on other people's personalities or life choices. Hopefully if we keep such judgments off the board, things will be calmer and more helpful for everyone.
